William R. Knocke, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Bill Knocke holds the position of the W.C. English Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he has been a faculty member for the past 31 years. His research and teaching focus areas relate to physical-chemical processes for water treatment, with one of his primary areas related to water treatment plant residuals characterization, dewatering and ultimate disposal. A unique focus of portions of his research has been on evaluating how water treatment process decisions ultimately affect the rate and extent of residuals dewatering that can be achieved. Dr. Knocke has published his work on water plant residuals extensively in the AWWA and ASCE journals, and has completed AWWARF research projects on the subject working closely with water utilities. He has received the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award as well as the ASCE Walter Huber Research Prize among other major awards. Dr. Knocke has BS, MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri – Columbia.
